  • Hampta Pass Trek with Camping At Chandertaal and Trip to Kunzum La (6 Days)

Tour Detail

This is one amazing trip that covers Hampta Pass trek, camping at Lake Chandratal, Kunzum La and the famed Spiti road trip with truly amazing photography opportunities. Kullu and Lahaul are two adjoining districts and are separated by the formidable Rohtang La. Rohtang La is snowbound from October to June. Both the valleys are geographically quite different. The Kullu/Manali valleys are green with thick forest cover and heavy rains. However, Lahaul is in a rain-shadow area with partial Trans-Himalayan barrenness. The trail to Chandratal over Hampta Pass combines both these areas gives a wonderful walk with two completely different terrains to enjoy.

Conduct of the trip:

The trip is conducted with safety as the top most priority and Mountaineerz. Safety Protocol is strictly adhered to. Trip manager is appointed to take care of minutest of details and interact with clients from the day the trip is booked. Safety and comfort of the guests is of utmost importance. The lead guide has ample of prior experience with knowledge of first aid and the assistant guides are the natives of the region. The camping and kitchen staff is tenured and geared to service at high levels. The chef will serve various cuisines making it a well rounded culinary experience. The stays used for the stays have been thoroughly researched and experienced by us in order to ensure comfort and hygiene. Since not many are used to walking long hours with load, for your own trekking pleasure we strongly suggest that you hire porters to carry your personal bags.
Camps on Trek: Spacious tents to be shared by 2 persons. The tents will be pitched on a meadow or flat ground with insulated rubber/foam/rubber mattresses. Sleeping bags will be provided with a fleece sleeping liner for each to be used personally and returned at the end of the trek. There will be a separate kitchen and dining tents. For a small group we carry kitchen cum dining tents. The camp area will have a sack to throw trash,
a water point to fetch drinking water and a washing point. Our staff will help with any task related to maintenance of the campsite and keeping things available.

There will be separate toilet tents for men and women. The toilets will be dry toilets where a pit will be dug and will contain a hump of mud inside the tent with a trowel in each toilet tent. While shifting the camps, we will ensure that the pit is well covered and the area is clean.

Expedition Leader: Qualified and immensely experienced mountaineer, he will conduct the entire program and take decisions in consultations with the team and depending on the weather, snow and other situations on ground.

Assistant guides: Qualified and experienced assistant guides with knowledge of first aid and rescue techniques will help the lead guide open the route, set up ropes etc and to give personal attention to the participants.

Local Staff: We hire only who has experience on this trail as support crew like Cook, helpers, porters, mule persons. These are expert of their fields and have at least 4 years of experience.

Provision of utensils would be there for every trekker but we strongly recommend carrying lunch boxes for days when packed food needs to be given

Leave no Trace: We strictly follow leave no trace policies on any trek i.e. making zero impact on the environment like avoiding packed plastic foods, making the camp drenches filled up with mud again to make it viable for other trekkers in future, camping on durable surfaces, minimize campfire impacts , dispose of waste properly.

The final ridge is a little steep to climb and when snowbound you will you will have to cut steps in the ice up the pass. The view from here is jaw dropping. The peaks of in Lahaul, particularly in the Kulti valley and of the Chandrabhaga group, are seen as a huge cluster, with peak of Mulkila IV raising its head above them. Day 4: Sheagoru to Chatru (3360 m) to Chandratal (4270 m) (4 hr trek and 2 hr drive)

Today’s trek begins with crossing a small stream and a walk following the valley stream down to the mighty River Chandra. The descent to River Chandra is a bit steep and follows a long ridge. Once in the valley you will rejoin the road which crosses the bridge across the river to Chatru. However gentle the river appears, do not try to ford the River
Chandra – always use a bridge. This deceptive river has swept away many trekkers trying to take a shortcut. Arriving by the side of Manali-Spiti road at Chatru, we will stop here for tea and lunch break before driving to Chandratal via Chhota Dhara (3517 m) and Batal.
There are lovely views of the “Chhota Shigri” (small glacier) and “Bara Shigri” (big glacier) along with several high peaks of Lahaul. From Batal onwards it can be very windy as the valley opens up here. The road climbs steeply around many bends to Kunzum La in the east. This road leads to Spiti valley. There is a new footpath leading from Kunzum La that descends to Chandratal, however the more direct approach is the road from Batal, going into the Chandra valley in the north. We will be driving along the left bank river Chandra after crossing a bridge near Batal. The trail continues for about 14 km to the scenic campsite at the bank of Chandratal, from here you can see the panoramic view of the Chandrabhaga Range.
